“War violates every right of a child – the right to life, the right to be with family and community, the right to health, the right to the development of the personality and the right to be nurtured and protected.”

“….modern wars are exploiting, maiming and killing children more callously and more systematically than ever”

Graca Machel 1996 and 2000

The ‘war on terror’ has been a ‘war of terror’ for millions of children: the terror of being killed; the terror of being maimed; the terror of losing your parents or other close family members; the terror of losing your home, your community, your country;  the terror of kidnap; the terror of being sold; the terror of sexual trafficking; the terror of rape; the terror of illegal detention; the terror of torture; the terror of forced labour; the terror of forced marriage; the terror of being forced to kill; the terror of violent abuse;  the terror of isolation; the terror of being a street child; the terror of poverty;  the terror of hunger; the terror of thirst; the terror of drug addiction; the terror of sickness and cancer; the terror of congenital deformity; the terror of terror.

War is not inevitable…

“…it would be cynical, in the light of the suffering of the war-affected children of the world, to accept war as an inevitable part of the human condition.” Dr Joanna Santa Barbara
